This is a new painting using oil paint on hardboard. The way I see it, this painting can be viewed several ways. The first is magma coming up out of the ocean floor preparing to turn into a new volcanic island. The second viewing ( or birth) looks like a sperm cell heading towards an unfertilised egg. Do you see anything else?

The last two weeks have been fantastic creating a new handmade, 10 layer screen print at Artrite Screen Printing in Onehunga. They are the best in the business. Working alongside the likes of Brad Novak, Michael Smither, Matt Payne and Max Gimblett has been humbling. I really think screen printing is a wonderful form of art making.

There is something really special about Aotea ( Great Barrier Island). I was lucky enough to recently make some art from my last trip to this majestic place, late last year. This painting is one of my passengers…an elder kaumatua .I took a photo of him contemplating life and gazing into the distance without me realising it.  I love the colours of the art studio behind him. This painting will be at the The Auckland Art Show at the Viaduct Events Centre from the 12th of July until the 14th next month. Come along..see you there.

I love coming across works of art that get you thinking. This is an older cut out painting of mine from 2018 using oil paint on hard board. I have used reflective full moons and also people in the shape of a butterfly. The shape also makes an abstract face. Ive tried to make the ephemeral nature of these things more permanent  by using longer lasting paint. What do you think?

Whenever I see a rainbow I stop what I’m doing to appreciate its splendour. A brief and beautiful moment in time. It is often hard to look away. Many cultures believe the rainbow is the pathway between mortals and the gods.  Sir Isaac Newton demonstrated that white light (signifying purity, or the holy spirit) is composed of all the colours of the rainbow.

This new oil painting is a biggie…140 cm x 100 cm. I’m loving the colours and also the process.

I was extremely fortunate at the start of this week to talk about art making  in Northland. Mark Amery from Radio New Zealand got in touch after noticing that I am originally from Wellington. Being a fellow Wellingtonian and creative person himself must have struck a chord with him. I must say it was a real pleasure and Im sure the listeners will feel inspired to visit Baylys Beach someday soon.

Thanks again Mark!

Put some colour on your wall with a splash of rainbow! The great thing about this recent rain has been breaking the dry spell, more waterfalls, and of course rainbows.

This painting was inspired by a trip over to Ocean Beach near Whangarei.
